A link road connecting the Ganga Expressway to Unnao’s Sonic toll plaza suffered erosion

July 5, 2026: A link road connecting the Ganga Expressway with the Sonic toll plaza in Unnao was damaged after the season’s first spell of heavy rain, just over two months after the ₹12,000 crore expressway was inaugurated. The seven-metre approach road on the Meerut-Prayagraj carriageway near kilometre 421 developed a washout as heavy rainfall eroded the embankment, causing part of the carriageway to collapse. By Saturday, further erosion had damaged roadside drains and toppled a traffic sign.

Authorities carried out emergency repair work on Friday and Saturday, but fresh soil erosion at the same location has raised concerns about the stability of the embankment. Local residents alleged that slope protection measures, including grass cover designed to prevent soil erosion, were either inadequate or missing, leading to repeated damage after rainfall.

Patel Infrastructure project manager Satish Singh said such issues can occur after the first heavy rains and assured that the damaged section would be repaired. The latest incident adds to a series of construction-related concerns on the Ganga Expressway. Even before Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the project on April 29, reports of subsidence, soil erosion and damaged service lanes had surfaced at multiple locations near the Sonic area, prompting earlier repair work.
