Authorities verify viral video as leaders demand swift action and raise concerns over law and order
April 1, 2026: A video circulating on social media allegedly shows Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, linked to Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), claiming responsibility for the vandalism incident. However, authorities have stated that the authenticity of the video is still under verification. Police have registered a case against unknown individuals, with Deputy Superintendent Daljit Singh Khakh confirming that an investigation is underway.
Officials noted that there were no CCTV cameras installed at the site, complicating efforts to identify the culprits. Police teams are now scanning footage from nearby locations for leads. This is reportedly not the first such incident, as the same statue was vandalised last year as well, raising concerns about recurring security lapses.
The incident has sparked sharp political reactions, with leaders across parties condemning the act and demanding strict action. BSP Punjab chief Avtar Singh Karimpuri staged a protest and set a 72-hour deadline for arrests, while also announcing a public gathering. Meanwhile, Punjab BJP chief Sunil Jakhar and former Union minister Som Parkash criticised the state government led by Bhagwant Mann, urging stronger measures to maintain law and order and prevent attempts to disturb social harmony.
