The weather department has forecast thunderstorms, rain and strong winds across north India
May 28, 2026: The India Meteorological Department has issued a major weather alert for several regions across the country, predicting relief from the ongoing heatwave conditions in northwestern India over the next 24 hours. However, severe heat is expected to continue in parts of Rajasthan, Vidarbha and eastern Madhya Pradesh for the time being.
According to the IMD, Delhi-NCR and several northern states are likely to experience thunderstorms, rainfall and dust storms between May 28 and May 31. Wind speeds in Delhi may reach 70-80 kmph, accompanied by lightning and moderate rainfall. The department also warned of thundersqualls across Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi on May 28 and 29, while heavy rainfall and hailstorm activity are likely in parts of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, western Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.
The weather department further stated that the southwest monsoon is advancing rapidly and conditions remain favourable for its progress over parts of the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal in the coming days. Heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning alerts have also been issued for several states in northeast, eastern and southern India. Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious and avoid venturing outdoors during severe weather conditions.
