India Meteorological Department flags heat surge as World Meteorological Organization warns of possible Super El Niño.

May 6, 2026: After a brief period of relief, parts of north India are expected to face a fresh spell of intense heat and heatwave conditions after May 9, according to forecasts by the India Meteorological Department. The current phase of cooler winds is likely to give way to soaring temperatures, with several regions already witnessing early heatwave alerts.

Global climate agencies, including the World Meteorological Organization, have warned of a possible strong El Niño event developing between May and July 2026. Reports suggest that if ocean temperatures rise significantly, it could escalate into a rare “Super El Niño,” potentially the strongest in over a century, intensifying extreme weather patterns worldwide.

Experts have also flagged unusual ocean warming patterns across the Pacific, which may further strengthen the phenomenon. In India, this could translate into prolonged heatwaves, warmer nights, and increased stress on water resources. Temperatures in parts of Uttar Pradesh have already crossed 47°C, signalling an early onset of extreme summer conditions.

Adding to concerns, forecasts indicate a weaker-than-normal monsoon this year. Since nearly 70% of India’s rainfall depends on the monsoon, any shortfall could severely impact agriculture, water supply, and food prices. Regions like Rajasthan, Haryana, and Madhya Pradesh are expected to be among the worst affected by heat and drought risks.

The combined impact of rising temperatures and a weak monsoon could pose a serious challenge for farmers and the broader economy, making the coming months critical for both climate and livelihood outcomes.
