Rising temperatures fail to slow voter turnout as key issues shape decisions across West Bengal and Tamil Nadu

April 23, 2026: As polling continues across West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, soaring temperatures are adding to the intensity of the electoral atmosphere. In the first phase of voting across 152 constituencies in West Bengal, voter turnout has remained steady despite challenging weather conditions. Districts like Murshidabad and West Bardhaman recorded temperatures between 34°C and 36°C, yet voters continued to queue up from early morning.

Amid the heat, electoral conversations remain focused on governance and development. Public sentiment reflects a wide range of priorities, from employment and education to women’s empowerment. In Alipurduar, voters highlighted job creation and education, while in Purulia, concerns around social progress and women’s empowerment took centre stage.

Politically, the contest remains intense, with speculation over whether the All India Trinamool Congress can retain power or if the Bharatiya Janata Party will make gains. As voting progresses, the election is emerging as a crucial test of governance, development expectations, and public trust across both states.
