IMD Issues Orange Alert for Several Districts, Predicts Significant Temperature Drop

Shimla, March 1: Himachal Pradesh continues to battle extreme weather as heavy rainfall and snowfall have gripped the region over the past two days. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has now warned of another intense spell beginning March 3 due to an approaching western disturbance.

“A new western disturbance is likely to impact Himachal Pradesh from the night of March 2, bringing heavy rain and snowfall across several districts,” said Sandeep Kumar Sharma, Senior Scientist at IMD Shimla.

Heavy Rainfall and Snowfall Across the State

🔹 Past 24 Hours: Most parts of the state received moderate to heavy rainfall and snowfall.
🔹 Highest Rainfall: Bhuntar (112 mm), Chhatrari (108 mm), Sundernagar (108 mm), and Manali (68 mm).
🔹 Snowfall: Kothi (15 cm), Jot (4 cm).

According to IMD data, Shimla, Kullu, Mandi, Kangra, and Lahaul-Spiti witnessed significant precipitation, with temperatures dropping sharply.

Weather Forecast: More Rain and Snow on the Way

  • Light to moderate rain expected in Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, and Shimla.
  • Higher reaches of Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur to receive fresh snowfall.
  • Plains and lower hills, including Una, Bilaspur, Sirmaur, Solan, and Hamirpur, may get light showers.
  • Thunderstorms and lightning likely in mid-altitude areas.

🟠 Orange Alert: Kangra, Chamba, Lahaul-Spiti (Heavy rain & snowfall).
🟡 Yellow Alert: Kullu, Mandi (Heavy rainfall warning).

🌤 Post March 5: Skies will gradually clear, and temperatures will begin rising from March 6 onward.

Temperature Plunge as Cold Wave Grips Himachal

The recent weather activity has caused a significant drop in temperatures across the state:
🌡 Shimla: 8°C (5°C below normal)
🌡 Solan: 12°C (9°C below normal)
🌡 Manali: 1.5°C (11°C below normal)
🌡 Mandi: 10.7°C (15°C below normal)

Daytime temperatures rose slightly by 4-5°C as the skies cleared, but another cold wave is expected from March 3.

With Himachal Pradesh bracing for another round of heavy rain and snowfall, residents are advised to stay alert and take necessary precautions.
