Mandi worst-hit as IMD issues heavy rain alert till July 7; rescue ops underway in flooded villages

Heavy monsoon rains have battered Himachal Pradesh, leaving a trail of destruction with at least 37 confirmed deaths, massive property loss exceeding ₹400 crore, and dozens still missing, especially in Mandi district. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh alert, predicting continued downpours till July 7.

Swollen rivers, blocked highways, power outages, and washed-out infrastructure have paralyzed the hill state, prompting the State Disaster Management Authority to mobilize extensive search, rescue, and restoration operations.

🌀 Mandi Subdivision Devastated
Mandi, particularly the Thunag subdivision, has emerged as ground zero for the devastation:

- 40 people reported missing
- Roads remain cut off and unmotorable
- Water, power, and telecom services crippled
- Indian Air Force conducting air-dropping of relief supplies
- A local village has been “completely devastated,” said DC Rana, Special Secretary of the Revenue Department
Senior engineers from the PWD, Electricity Board, and Jal Shakti Department are stationed on site to coordinate urgent repairs.

According to officials, the situation across Himachal is grim:
- Over 250 roads blocked statewide
- 500+ power transformers knocked out
- 700 drinking water schemes disrupted
- 26 additional deaths reported from road accidents
- Rescue teams from SDRF, NDRF, Home Guards, and local police deployed
“We’ve entered ₹400 crore worth of losses in our system, but actual numbers could be far higher,” DC Rana stated. “Right now, the priority is to save lives and restore critical services.”
⚠️ Climate Warning and School Disruption
Authorities have flagged the situation as a direct fallout of climate change and global warming, stressing that Himachal Pradesh is no longer immune to extreme weather events.
In Shimla, the capital, continuous rain has disrupted school activities, flooded classrooms, and created panic among students.
“Water is entering our classrooms. Our clothes and books are soaked. It’s scary,” said Tanuja Thakur, a student.
“Our school is surrounded by trees, and we fear one might fall.”
🛑 IMD Issues Rain Alert Till July 7
The IMD has extended its heavy rain warning for the region, urging locals and tourists to avoid unnecessary travel and stay indoors.
Local administrations have set up relief camps and emergency control rooms across affected districts.
With skies showing no signs of clearing and the ground already saturated, officials are bracing for more landslides and flash floods.
