Survey gives TMC edge over BJP in 294-seat West Bengal Assembly election

March 15, 2026: An opinion poll conducted by Matrize-IANS has predicted a close contest in the upcoming West Bengal Assembly Elections. The survey suggests that the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) is likely to retain an advantage over the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led alliance in the 294-seat assembly. According to the projections, TMC could win between 155 and 170 seats, while the BJP alliance is expected to secure around 100 to 115 seats, with other parties potentially winning five to seven seats.

In terms of vote share, the poll estimates TMC receiving between 43 and 45 percent of the votes, while the BJP alliance may secure around 41 to 43 percent. Other parties are projected to receive roughly 13 to 15 percent of the total vote share. The findings indicate that although TMC holds a slight advantage, the contest remains competitive with the BJP maintaining a strong presence across many constituencies.

Polling for all 294 assembly seats in West Bengal is scheduled to take place in two phases on April 23 and April 29. The counting of votes will be held on May 4 along with results from assembly elections in Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The final outcome will determine whether TMC retains power in the state or if the BJP significantly improves its tally.
