Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised the Centre’s decision to form a High-Level Committee on demographic change
May 26, 2026: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday welcomed the Centre’s decision to establish a High-Level Committee on demographic change, describing it as a “visionary and decisive step.” In a post on X, Sarma said illegal infiltration and unusual demographic shifts were not issues limited to one state, but serious national concerns linked to security, cultural identity and social stability.
Sarma stated that the initiative announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi would help address long-standing challenges arising from demographic changes across the country. He added that the committee, functioning under the leadership of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, would closely study abnormal population changes and recommend concrete measures to strengthen national security and safeguard border regions.
Highlighting Assam’s own experience, the Chief Minister said the state had been facing demographic challenges for decades. He noted that the committee’s work would play an important role in protecting cultural heritage, tribal communities and the rights of indigenous people. Sarma expressed confidence that the initiative would contribute significantly toward securing India’s future.
