The Indira Gandhi National Open University has begun the admission process for its PhD programmes for the July 2026 academic session. Interested candidates can submit their applications online from June 10 to July 1 through the university’s official admission portal.
The university is offering admissions to 36 doctoral programmes across a wide range of disciplines, providing opportunities for research scholars in social sciences, humanities and science streams.
IGNOU Offers Admission To 36 PhD Programmes
For the July 2026 cycle, IGNOU is inviting applications for PhD programmes in subjects including:
- Psychology
- Anthropology
- Political Science
- Public Administration
- Biochemistry
- Chemistry
- Sociology
- Education
- Commerce
- Management
- And several other disciplines
The university has advised candidates to carefully review the eligibility criteria and programme-specific requirements before submitting their applications.
Admissions To Follow UGC Regulations 2022
According to IGNOU, admissions will be conducted in accordance with the guidelines laid down under the University Grants Commission Regulations, 2022.
Candidates can apply through the following four categories:
1. UGC-NET With Junior Research Fellowship (JRF)
Applicants who have qualified UGC-NET along with JRF can apply directly under this category.
2. UGC-NET Candidates Eligible For Assistant Professor And PhD Admission
Candidates who have qualified UGC-NET and are eligible for both Assistant Professor positions and PhD admissions can apply through this route.
3. UGC-NET Candidates Eligible For PhD Admission Only
Applicants who qualify UGC-NET specifically for PhD admission are also eligible to apply.
4. University-Level Entrance Examination
Candidates who do not fall under the above categories can seek admission through IGNOU’s PhD entrance examination.
Interview Mandatory For All Candidates
IGNOU has clarified that all applicants, irrespective of the admission category, must appear for an interview or viva-voce as part of the final selection process.
However, candidates who have already qualified JRF or NET will receive an exemption from the entrance examination. Such candidates will be shortlisted directly for the interview stage based on their eligibility and academic credentials.
