Fourth S-400 system to arrive by mid-May as India plans more acquisitions and missile stock expansion
April 28, 2026: India has received its fourth S-400 air defence system from Russia, further strengthening its strategic capabilities ahead of the anniversary of Operation Sindoor. The system is expected to reach an Indian port by mid-May, while the fifth unit is scheduled for delivery in November. The development comes amid ongoing regional tensions, with the S-400 playing a key role in enhancing India’s ability to counter aerial threats.
The Centre has also approved the procurement of five additional S-400 systems, signalling a significant expansion of India’s air defence network. With a strike range of up to 400 kilometres, the system can target enemy aircraft, missiles, and surveillance platforms. Sources indicate that the newly delivered system is likely to be deployed in Rajasthan, strengthening India’s western defence front. Indian Air Force officials had earlier inspected the system in Russia before its shipment.
In addition, India plans to procure 280 more S-400 missiles to replenish stocks and build reserves following their reported use during Operation Sindoor. Reports suggest that the system was effectively deployed during the operation, prompting Pakistan to relocate its air assets further west to avoid exposure. The move highlights the growing importance of advanced air defence systems in shaping regional military dynamics.
