In a major reshuffle of India’s military top brass, the government on Saturday, May 9, 2026, announced the appointments of the next Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) and the next Chief of the Naval Staff.
Lt Gen (retd) NS Raja Subramani: Next Chief of Defence Staff
Lieutenant General (retd) NS Raja Subramani has been named the successor to General Anil Chauhan, whose tenure concludes on May 30, 2026. Along with his role as CDS, he will serve as the Secretary of the Department of Military Affairs (DMA).
Background & Experience
- Current Role: Military Adviser to the National Security Council Secretariat (since September 2025).
- Key Previous Post: Vice Chief of Army Staff (July 2024 – July 2025).
- Operational Expertise: Known for his deep strategic understanding of India’s western and northern borders, he previously commanded the Lucknow-based Central Army Command and the premier 2 Corps strike formation.
- Commission & Education: Commissioned into the Garhwal Rifles in December 1985. He is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy (NDA) and the Indian Military Academy (IMA).
Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan: Next Chief of the Naval Staff
Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan has been appointed as the 26th Chief of the Naval Staff, succeeding Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi, who is set to retire on May 31, 2026.
Background & Experience
- Current Role: Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command.
- Specialization: A specialist in Communication and Electronic Warfare with over 38 years of service.
- Key Commands: He has commanded elite vessels including the aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya, the guided-missile destroyer INS Mysore, and the missile corvette INS Kulish.
- Commission & Education: Commissioned on July 1, 1987. He holds a PhD in International Studies from Mumbai University and an MA from King’s College London.
