PM Modi blends campaign rhetoric with viral moment, targets TMC and promises CAA benefits

April 23, 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday took a sharp dig at the All India Trinamool Congress during a rally in Krishnanagar, using his recent “jhalmuri” moment as a political metaphor. “I ate the jhalmuri, but the spice hit TMC,” he said, suggesting public anger against the ruling party. He also claimed that the BJP-led NDA would secure a strong victory, adding that celebrations on May 4 would include both sweets and jhalmuri.

Modi further accused the TMC of promoting “jungle raj” and sheltering infiltrators, urging voters to support the BJP. He also addressed the Matua and Namashudra communities, promising accelerated citizenship under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) if his party comes to power. Assuring protection and equal rights, he said refugee families would receive full benefits as Indian citizens.

The remark comes days after Modi’s widely shared “jhalmuri break” video during his campaign in Jhargram, which garnered massive traction on social media. TMC chief Mamata Banerjee dismissed the episode as “scripted,” questioning the presence of cameras during the stop. The exchange has added a lighter yet pointed edge to the ongoing political contest in the state.
