As Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam emerges as the single-largest party, Karur witnesses a close contest
May 4, 2026: With Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) set to emerge as the single-largest party and stake claim to form the government, all eyes are on key constituencies like Karur. The seat, which drew nationwide attention last year, is witnessing a tight electoral battle. M. R. Vijayabhaskar of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam is leading with 46,064 votes, followed by AASEE.M Thiagarajan of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam with 40,784 votes, while Mathiyalagan VP trails closely with 39,586 votes.
Statewide trends indicate a strong performance by TVK, the party associated with actor-turned-politician Vijay, leading in 106 seats. Meanwhile, the AIADMK-Congress alliance is ahead in 51 constituencies, and the DMK-led alliance in 70. In terms of confirmed wins so far, TVK has secured 3 seats, while DMK has won 4.
Karur remains under the spotlight due to a tragic incident during a TVK rally on September 27, 2025. The event, addressed by Vijay, turned chaotic as an unexpectedly large crowd gathered, leading to a stampede that claimed dozens of lives and left many injured. Officials later revealed that the venue was ill-prepared for the turnout, lacking basic arrangements such as food and water, which contributed to the disaster.
