Kerala Human Rights Commission seeks immediate inquiry into ICU conditions at Thiruvananthapuram medical college hospital

April 18, 2026: The Kerala Human Rights Commission has ordered an urgent inquiry into the condition of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at a government medical college hospital in Thiruvananthapuram, following reports that it has been operating under temporary cloth-covered arrangements after a fire incident. Commission Chairperson Alexander Thomas took suo motu cognisance based on media reports highlighting difficulties faced by patients.

According to reports, the ICU has not been fully restored even a month after a ventilator-related fire, forcing authorities to run the unit under makeshift conditions. Concerns have also been raised over delays by the Public Works Department and the electrical wing in completing necessary repairs, further impacting patient care and safety.

The commission has directed the Director of Medical Education to appoint a senior officer to conduct an immediate probe and submit a report within two weeks, outlining corrective measures. It has also instructed PWD officials to expedite repair work and coordinate with hospital authorities. Senior officials from the health department and hospital administration have been asked to submit separate reports and appear before the commission on May 8 to explain the situation and steps taken.
