Left Democratic Front and United Democratic Front locked in tight battle ahead of polls
April 7, 2026: The 2026 Kerala Assembly elections are shaping up to be a closely fought contest, with the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the United Democratic Front (UDF) nearly tied, according to a latest opinion poll. The survey projects the UDF winning between 64 and 74 seats in the 140-member Assembly, while the LDF is expected to secure 63 to 73 seats. With the majority mark set at 71, even a small swing in votes could determine the outcome.
Vote share estimates further highlight the tight race, with the UDF projected to secure 39.7% of the votes and the LDF close behind at 38.7%. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by the BJP, is expected to win only 1 to 5 seats, indicating a limited role in government formation. The narrowing gap compared to earlier surveys suggests a highly competitive contest as polling day approaches.
The leadership race is equally close, with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan holding a slight edge over UDF leader V. D. Satheesan. Public opinion on the LDF government remains divided, with mixed ratings indicating possible anti-incumbency. The poll also flags concerns over the Congress-led alliance’s strategy, as multiple leadership faces may impact voter perception. With undecided voters still in play, the election is set to be a high-stakes, unpredictable battle.
