Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will hear the Trinamool Congress leadership’s position on June 19

June 17, 2026: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla is set to meet Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee on June 19 as part of the ongoing proceedings related to the split within the party. The hearing comes after 20 rebel TMC MPs sought recognition as a separate parliamentary group following their merger with the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI). Parliamentary sources said the Speaker will consider submissions from both sides before making a decision.

According to TMC sources, Banerjee was unable to attend an earlier meeting scheduled on June 15 because he was being questioned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). The party claimed that the Speaker’s office informed him about the meeting only a few hours in advance, while he was engaged in the ED proceedings and had no access to his phone or email. TMC MP Kirti Azad later informed the Speaker’s office about Banerjee’s unavailability and requested a fresh date.

The June 19 meeting is expected to be a crucial stage in determining the status of the rebel MPs and the future of the parliamentary dispute. While the rebel faction has already presented its case before the Speaker, the official TMC leadership will now get an opportunity to place its arguments on record. Any decision, sources said, will be taken in accordance with parliamentary rules, legal provisions and established procedures.
