On Monday, April 27, 2026, the Indian government issued a high-level advisory urging citizens to avoid panic buying of fuel as global supply chains face unprecedented pressure. Stalled peace talks between the US and Iran and the looming threat of the Strait of Hormuz closure have disrupted global energy markets. While the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has assured a 100% supply for domestic households, India has reportedly begun reviewing its fuel exports to prioritize local availability. In a significant policy shift, the government has also barred Piped Natural Gas (PNG) consumers from obtaining or refilling domestic LPG cylinders to conserve stocks.

Price Update: Domestic Rates Hold Steady, Commercial Gas Soars

Despite the geopolitical volatility, domestic LPG prices have remained unchanged since a ₹60 hike in March 2026. However, the commercial sector is feeling the heat. Following a major hike on April 1, the price of a 19 kg commercial cylinder stands at ₹2,078.50 in New Delhi and ₹2,161.00 in Bengaluru.

These sharp increases totaling nearly ₹350 in just two months are expected to impact the hospitality and manufacturing sectors, though the government is currently prioritizing supply for hospitals, pharma, and agriculture.

Digital Safeguards and Delivery Metrics

The Oil Ministry reported that over 51.8 lakh cylinders were delivered on April 25 alone, with no “dry-outs” reported at any distributorship. To prevent the illegal diversion of subsidized gas during this crisis, the government has ramped up the use of the Delivery Authentication Code (DAC), which now covers 94% of all deliveries. Furthermore, online bookings have surged to 98% as consumers follow the advisory to avoid physical visits to distributors. For migrant laborers, the supply of 5 kg FTL (Free Trade LPG) cylinders has been doubled to ensure they are not left stranded by the ongoing energy shock.

Fuel Export Restrictions and Neighborhood Support

The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed that India is currently assessing fuel-supply requests from neighboring countries. However, approvals will only be granted if there are surplus volumes after meeting domestic demand. This “India First” approach comes as the nation navigates the ripple effects of the West Asia war, which has already led to a nationwide halt on new LPG connections for the time being. Citizens are advised to rely strictly on official sources for updates and utilize digital platforms for all refills.
