The most significant anticipation revolves around the monthly price revision. Since the start of the US-Israel-Iran war, domestic 14.2kg cylinders have already seen a price jump of ₹60. However, the commercial sector has faced even tougher hits, with 19kg cylinder prices rising three times in a single month. In fact, April saw hikes of up to ₹218 in metro cities. Therefore, consumers are watching the LPG rule changes from May closely to see if another price hike is on the horizon or if the government will provide some relief.

New Booking Intervals and Safety Measures

Beyond pricing, the government is also looking at how often you can book a refill. Currently, urban users must wait 25 days between bookings, while rural users have a 45-day gap. Rumors suggest that the new rules might further adjust these lock-in periods to prevent hoarding. Additionally, the OTP-based delivery system, known as the Delivery Authentication Code (DAC), is now becoming a permanent fixture. This system ensures that your cylinder reaches your home safely and prevents illegal diversion to the black market.

Mandatory eKYC and Aadhaar Authentication

Another vital part of the LPG rule changes involves the mandatory eKYC process. The Ministry of Petroleum recently clarified that if you haven’t done your biometric authentication yet, you must do it now. For Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) beneficiaries, this is especially important to keep receiving your subsidies. Specifically, these customers need to complete the process once every financial year to ensure their direct benefit transfers continue after their seventh refill.

The Shift from LPG to Piped Gas (PNG)

The government is also pushing hard for a transition to Piped Natural Gas (PNG) in major cities. According to new orders, if PNG infrastructure is available in your area and you refuse to switch, your LPG supply could stop after three months. Furthermore, the LPG rule changes reinforce that you cannot hold both an active PNG connection and a subsidized LPG cylinder. This strategy aims to free up LPG for rural areas and migrant laborers, for whom the supply of 5kg small cylinders has recently doubled.

As the deadline for these new rules nears, make sure to check your eKYC status and plan your bookings accordingly. Staying informed will help you navigate the fluctuating energy prices and ensure your kitchen continues to run smoothly despite the global energy crisis.
