CPI(M) general secretary M A Baby criticised the Congress-led UDF over its ongoing leadership tussle in Kerala

May 12, 2026: CPI(M) general secretary M A Baby on Monday criticised the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) over the ongoing competition for leadership positions in Kerala. Speaking to reporters, Baby said the alliance’s internal divisions had been “thoroughly exposed” and mocked the Congress for its continuing discussions over who should become the next chief minister.

Baby said there was no urgency to decide the Leader of Opposition in Kerala, adding that the CPI(M)’s state unit would take an appropriate decision at the right time. Taking a swipe at the Congress, he remarked that the UDF claims to be united, but there was “no unity at the top level” of the Congress party itself. He also mocked the frequent trips of party leaders between Kerala and Delhi for consultations, saying only airlines were benefiting from the situation.

The Congress high command is currently discussing the selection of the next Kerala chief minister, with senior leaders V D Satheesan, K C Venugopal and Ramesh Chennithala seen as major contenders. The Congress-led UDF secured 102 seats in the recent Kerala Assembly elections, while the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) was reduced to 35 seats after losing power in the state.
