The Madras High Court has directed the Tamil Nadu DGP to provide immediate police protection to AIADMK MLA C Ve Shanmugam
July 3, 2026: The Madras High Court has directed the Director General of Police (DGP), Tamil Nadu, to provide immediate police protection to AIADMK MLA and former MP C Ve Shanmugam after observing that he continues to face threats to his life. Justice G K Ilanthiraiyan passed the order while disposing of a petition filed by the legislator, stating that he may approach the jurisdictional police with any fresh complaint, which must be acted upon in accordance with the law.
In his petition, Shanmugam stated that in 2006, he, his two brothers and his brother-in-law were attacked by armed assailants allegedly linked to his political rivals. While he survived the attack, one of his brothers was killed. An FIR was registered and the case is still pending trial before the First Additional District Court in Tindivanam. He also submitted that although he was previously provided police protection due to repeated threats, the security cover was later withdrawn despite the risks continuing.
The court noted that Shanmugam had filed nearly 20 complaints since 2006, with some resulting in FIRs and others being closed after inquiry. Observing that the murder case involving his family member remains pending and that he currently serves as an MLA while holding key positions within the AIADMK, the High Court ruled that he had established a prima facie case for police protection and directed the authorities to provide adequate security.
