Protests erupted in Uttar Pradesh’s Malihabad after Hindu groups demanded permission to perform religious rituals

May 26, 2026: Tension prevailed in Uttar Pradesh’s Malihabad after Hindu organisations staged a protest over a disputed religious site associated with the Raja Kans Pasi fort controversy. The demonstration intensified on the occasion of Bada Mangal when protesters attempted to march towards the site to perform puja rituals and recite Hanuman Chalisa.

The disputed structure is viewed differently by the two communities. Members of the Muslim community describe it as a maqbara, while several Hindu groups and members of the Pasi community claim the site has historical links to Raja Kans Pasi and an ancient Hindu structure. Protesters carrying prayer materials gathered near the area demanding permission for puja and Sundarkand recitation.

Heavy police deployment was arranged near the site to prevent escalation and maintain law and order. Police stopped the protesters before they could reach the structure and persuaded them to perform symbolic prayers from a distance. After discussions with senior officials, the protesters agreed to withdraw peacefully and said they would pursue the matter legally. Authorities said restrictions were imposed to avoid communal tension ahead of Bakrid and security remains tightened in the area.
