West Bengal CM announces legal action after Amit Shah’s controversial remarks spark political showdown

April 25, 2026: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday said she would file a legal case against Union Home Minister Amit Shah over his controversial remarks ahead of the second phase of Assembly elections. Addressing a rally in Hooghly, Banerjee criticised Shah’s language, stating that such comments were unacceptable from someone holding a constitutional position.

The controversy erupted after Shah, during a rally in Arambagh, warned of strict action against alleged TMC “goons” and used the phrase “hang them upside down” if voters were troubled. Reacting strongly, Banerjee accused the BJP of adopting a forceful approach that would not resonate with the people of Bengal, asserting that such rhetoric would not help the party win the state.

The political tensions come as West Bengal heads into the next phase of voting on April 29. The first phase recorded a high voter turnout of over 91 per cent, according to the Election Commission of India. With counting scheduled for May 4, the sharp exchange between leaders has intensified the already heated electoral battle in the state.
