A 63-year-old man was killed after a tree collapsed on a shop in Kurla amid heavy rainfall, as rain-related deaths

July 5, 2026: A 63-year-old man died after a tree collapsed onto a shop during heavy rainfall in Mumbai’s Kurla on Sunday, marking the city’s second fatal tree-fall incident in less than a week. The incident occurred near the Hindi BMC School in Kurla West’s Naupada area. The victim, identified as Yunus Kundawala, was rescued from the debris and rushed to Fauzia Hospital, where he was declared dead. Fire brigade personnel, police, BEST officials, and civic teams carried out rescue and clearance operations at the site.

Relentless rainfall and strong winds have caused widespread disruption across Mumbai, leading to waterlogging, uprooted trees, flight diversions, and several weather-related incidents. Another tree fell in Bandra East on Sunday, damaging parked vehicles, though no injuries were reported. So far, at least four people have lost their lives in rain-related incidents as the city continues to battle the impact of the monsoon.

Tree collapses and open manholes have emerged as major safety hazards during the ongoing rains. On Saturday, an 18-year-old motorcyclist died after a tree branch fell on him in Aarey Colony, while an 11-year-old boy was killed on June 30 after a tree crashed onto a school bus in Chembur. Earlier this month, a 55-year-old man also died after falling into an uncovered sewer manhole in Sakinaka. According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the manhole had been left unsecured by a private contractor carrying out drain-cleaning work, prompting fresh concerns over civic safety measures.
