Clashes break out in Bishnupur district after rumours over security personnel trigger unrest
April 15, 2026: Tensions flared in Bishnupur district on Tuesday after protesters intercepted vehicles carrying security personnel in civilian attire, leading to violent clashes. According to police, rumours about the identity and purpose of the personnel triggered suspicion among locals, who stopped the convoy near Thinungei. The situation escalated as a mob gathered and turned aggressive, resulting in damage to vehicles and injuries to civilians.
Two of the three vehicles were set on fire amid allegations by some locals that they were transporting armed militants in disguise. Police teams rushed to the spot to control the situation, leading to clashes with protesters. At least 21 civilians sustained minor injuries, while five individuals were arrested in connection with the violence.
In response, authorities imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, restricting movement in the area from 5 pm until further notice. Officials have urged residents to avoid spreading unverified information and maintain calm as security forces continue to monitor the situation.
