Pre-dawn blaze in Kasauli’s iconic market destroys eight shops, triggers explosions and raises concerns over safety measures.
April 14, 2026: A major fire broke out early Monday morning at Kasauli Heritage Market in Himachal Pradesh’s Solan district, destroying eight shops and causing an estimated loss of ₹3 crore. The blaze, which started around 4 am, spread rapidly through the closely built structures, sending thick smoke into the sky. Although no casualties were reported, multiple LPG cylinder explosions intensified the fire, reducing several eateries, gift shops and a medical store to ashes.
Firefighters rushed to the spot with four tenders from nearby areas and battled the flames for nearly five hours before bringing the situation under control around 10:30 am. Officials suspect a short circuit triggered the fire, which began in an eatery before spreading to adjoining shops. The explosions of several LPG cylinders disrupted firefighting efforts, with around 10–12 damaged cylinders later recovered from the site.
The incident has deeply impacted local residents and shop owners, especially as the market holds significant historical and cultural value. Established during the British era, the market is over a century old and a key attraction of Kasauli, known for its colonial charm, traditional architecture and popular outlets like the famous Narinder Bun Samosa shop. Authorities have provided immediate relief to affected shopkeepers, while residents have raised concerns over safety lapses and fire preparedness in the heritage zone.
