Mayawati asks party workers to avoid protests, reiterates demand for sub-quota within women’s reservation
April 22, 2026: Mayawati on Wednesday directed party workers not to hold protests over the women’s reservation issue, stressing that discipline must be maintained. The Bahujan Samaj Party chief reiterated that the party continues to support 33% reservation for women but insists on a separate sub-quota for women from SC, ST, and OBC communities.
She clarified that the party’s position, first outlined on April 15, remains unchanged and workers should communicate this clearly to avoid confusion. Mayawati also expressed concern that without such a sub-quota, women from marginalised communities may not receive fair representation. Additionally, she repeated her demand for 50% reservation for women in proportion to their population.
Apart from the reservation issue, Mayawati urged party cadres to focus on strengthening the organisation ahead of upcoming elections. She asked workers to highlight development initiatives undertaken during the BSP’s rule in Uttar Pradesh and emphasised that balanced growth and strong law and order are achievable under BSP governance.
