The Meghalaya government has imposed strict restrictions on pig movement
June 3, 2026: The Meghalaya government has intensified containment measures following the detection of African Swine Fever (ASF) in several districts. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said the outbreak is being closely monitored and immediate action has been taken to prevent further spread. Confirmed cases have been reported in parts of East Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills, Ri-Bhoi and Eastern West Khasi Hills districts, as well as at the Regional Pig Breeding Farm in Kyrdemkulai.
The Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department has declared areas within a one-kilometre radius of infected premises as infected zones, while regions up to 10 kilometres away have been designated surveillance zones. Authorities have imposed a complete ban on the movement of live pigs, pig feed, pork and pork products in affected areas. Pig markets, slaughterhouses and abattoirs have also been ordered shut until further notice.
Officials have directed farm owners to follow strict biosecurity measures, restrict visitor access and maintain proper sanitation. Disposal of pig carcasses in water bodies has been prohibited, with penalties and possible imprisonment for violations. Veterinary teams are conducting surveillance and sample collection, while the Forest Department has been asked to monitor wild boar populations to prevent transmission. The government has urged local bodies and farmers to cooperate with containment efforts and report any unusual illness or mortality among pigs.
