Mehbooba Mufti attended Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s state funeral in Tehran after receiving an official invitation

July 3, 2026: Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti joined an Indian delegation in Tehran to pay tribute to Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, during the ongoing state funeral ceremonies. The delegation offered Salat al-Janazah (funeral prayer) and prayed for the late leader. Mufti had received an official invitation from the Iranian government to attend the ceremonies as a distinguished guest representing India.

Before leaving for Iran, Mufti described the invitation as a rare honour and said it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to pay her final respects to Ayatollah Khamenei. The invitation was issued by Mohseen Qummi, Director of the International Relations Department at the Office of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, inviting her to attend the funeral events being held from July 3 to July 6 in Tehran.

Iran has organised a multi-day state funeral, beginning with the body lying in state at Tehran’s Grand Mosalla, followed by ceremonies in the holy city of Qom and the final funeral procession and burial in Mashhad at the Imam Reza shrine. Authorities have enforced heightened security across major cities as thousands of mourners are expected to participate in the farewell ceremonies.
