Forest department removes wedding arrangements from Rajaji Tiger Reserve core zone, registers case after public backlash.
April 26, 2026: The Uttarakhand Forest Department on Sunday removed wedding arrangements set up inside the core zone of Rajaji Tiger Reserve following a controversy involving state minister Khajan Dass’s son. The preparations at the Sureshwari Devi Temple complex included tents, chairs, coolers, and water tankers. Action was taken after images and videos of the setup went viral on social media, sparking public outrage.
Officials confirmed that no prior permission had been granted for such an आयोजन in the protected area. The reserve administration registered a case against members of the temple committee under the Wildlife Protection Act. Acting director Rajiv Dhiman said the entire setup was dismantled and notices were issued to forest staff to determine if there was any negligence in allowing materials into the core zone.
Defending himself, Khajan Dass termed the controversy a political conspiracy and claimed he had informed a senior forest official, with arrangements made through the temple committee. However, forest authorities reiterated that strict rules govern activities in the reserve, including limited access, fixed worship hours, and a ban on events that could disturb wildlife. An inquiry is underway, and further action will be taken against those found responsible.
