Heavy monsoon rains in Mumbai have led to flight disruptions, road congestion, and a heightened orange alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). With the city reeling under intense downpour since early morning, major airlines including IndiGo, SpiceJet, and Akasa Air have issued travel advisories urging flyers to prepare for possible delays and traffic bottlenecks.
IndiGo Advisory: Monitor Flights, Allow Extra Time
India’s largest carrier, IndiGo, released a public notice warning of temporary flight schedule disruptions from Mumbai Airport (BOM) due to the inclement weather.
“We advise all travellers flying from Mumbai today, July 15, to expect possible delays and allow extra travel time to the airport due to slow road traffic caused by heavy rain,” IndiGo said.
Passengers have been urged to check flight status through the IndiGo website or mobile app for real-time updates.
SpiceJet and Akasa Air Follow Suit
SpiceJet echoed similar concerns, issuing a notice that read:
“Due to bad weather (heavy rains) in Mumbai (BOM), all departures/arrivals and their consequential flights may be affected. Passengers are requested to keep a check on their flight status.”
Meanwhile, Akasa Air expanded its advisory beyond Mumbai, stating:
“Due to heavy rainfall and waterlogging in parts of Mumbai, Pune, Kolkata, and Goa, we anticipate slow moving traffic and congestion on roads leading to the airport.”
IMD Issues Orange Alert for Mumbai & Thane
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for Mumbai and Thane districts on July 15, warning of intense rainfall ranging from 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm within 24 hours.
Heavy showers have been recorded in areas such as Andheri, Vile Parle, Santacruz, Khar, and Bandra, with ongoing rainfall expected to intensify in BKC, Kurla, Chembur, and Ghatkopar over the next few hours.
“Moderate spells of rain are very likely at isolated places in Mumbai and Thane in the next 3–4 hours,” the IMD reported, adding that thunder/lightning and gusty winds may accompany the rain.
Extremely heavy rains were also reported along the Alibaug–Mumbai–Pune corridor, with Pune expected to experience rainfall until 1 PM today.
The IMD has further forecasted light to moderate rainfall across Mumbai and its suburbs over the next four days, urging citizens to exercise caution when venturing out.
