Clashes between TMC workers and Humayun Kabir supporters, along with a pre-poll blast near a booth, spark tension in Murshidabad on voting day

April 23, 2026: Tension escalated in Murshidabad on polling day after clashes broke out between Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers and supporters of Humayun Kabir, who had earlier distanced himself from the party. The confrontation reportedly turned violent, with scuffles breaking out during voting and security personnel deployed at the booth also getting caught in the unrest.

The situation comes a day after a blast near a polling booth in the Nawda Assembly constituency triggered panic among locals. The explosion occurred in the Shibnagar area, close to a designated polling station, where crude bombs were allegedly hurled on a nearby road. A woman was injured in the incident but is stated to be in stable condition.

The proximity of the blast to the polling station has raised serious concerns over election security, despite the presence of central forces. Political accusations have also intensified, with the TMC blaming supporters of the Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP), led by Humayun Kabir, while opposition parties have been accused of involvement. Security has since been tightened, with police and central forces increasing patrols across sensitive areas.
