PM blends Uniform Civil Code promise with development push and tribal safeguards ahead of April 9 polls
April 1, 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi placed the Uniform Civil Code at the core of the BJP’s campaign for the Assam Assembly Elections 2026, linking it to the preservation of Assam’s cultural identity. Addressing a rally in Gogamukh, he stressed that the proposed implementation would safeguard tribal traditions in Sixth Schedule areas, presenting the UCC as a balanced reform rather than a uniform imposition across communities.
Projecting confidence in the BJP-led NDA’s prospects, Modi said the party is set to secure a “hat-trick” victory in Assam, framing the election as part of the broader vision of building a “Viksit Bharat.” He highlighted the government’s decade-long track record, citing welfare delivery and governance reforms, including housing support for over 22 lakh economically weaker families in the state.
Ahead of the rally, Modi visited a tea estate in Dibrugarh, interacting with workers and engaging in tea leaf plucking. Calling tea the “soul of Assam,” he praised tea garden families for their contribution to the state’s global identity. The outreach is being seen as a strategic effort to connect with grassroots voters, especially tea garden workers, a key demographic in the state’s electoral landscape.
