The landscape of coastal travel in Southern India is set for a major transformation following the announcement of a new Vande Bharat Express connecting Bengaluru, Mangaluru, and Madgaon (Goa).

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, during his recent visit to Bengaluru on April 27, 2026, confirmed that the technical hurdles posed by the steep gradients of the Western Ghats have been successfully addressed. This long-awaited service, to be operated by the South Western Railway (SWR), promises to be one of India’s most picturesque rail routes, cutting through the lush greenery of the Ghats and the pristine Konkan coast.

Linking Three Hubs: A Tourism Game-Changer

The proposed route is designed to integrate three of India’s most vital travel destinations into a single high-speed corridor. By extending the existing Mangaluru-Madgaon service to Bengaluru, the new train will seamlessly connect the “Silicon Valley of India” with the coastal charm of Mangaluru and the world-renowned beaches of Goa. For leisure travelers, this significantly streamlines the journey, replacing current time-consuming options with a semi-high-speed alternative capable of reaching speeds up to 180 kmph.

Engineering Overcomes the Ghats

Traversing the Western Ghats has historically been a challenge for high-speed rail due to the “Ghat sections” which require specialized braking and engine power. Minister Vaishnaw noted that modern engineering solutions have now cleared the path for Vande Bharat’s deployment on this technically demanding stretch. The train will feature state-of-the-art amenities, including:

  • Onboard Wi-Fi and vacuum-based bio-toilets for a premium experience.
  • CCTV Surveillance and enhanced safety protocols.

More Connectivity: Bengaluru-Mumbai Sleeper and Superfast Rails

In a double win for Karnataka commuters, the Railway Minister also announced two new services between Bengaluru and Mumbai slated for launch within the next two months. This includes a Vande Bharat Sleeper Express, designed to slash overnight travel time between the two metros to just 13 hours, and a new Superfast Mail/Express via the Hubballi-Dharwad route. Furthermore, Vaishnaw shared that India’s first indigenous bullet train prototype is expected to be unveiled next year, with full-scale production beginning in late 2027.
