Northeast India Devastated by Flash Floods and Landslides: 30 Dead in Two Days

Torrential rains have triggered deadly landslides and flash floods across Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, and Mizoram, impacting over 60,000 people and claiming 30 lives.

June 1, 2025 Guwahati: Torrential rains in Northeast India have caused widespread devastation, triggering flash floods and landslides that have claimed at least 30 lives in the past two days across Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, and Mizoram. Over 60,000 people have been affected in 12 districts of Assam alone.

Assam’s Deadly Toll

Five people lost their lives in landslides in Assam’s Kamrup Metropolitan district. Urban Affairs Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah confirmed that three women were killed in a landslide in Guwahati’s Bonda area on Friday. In the city, a 67-year-old record for single-day rainfall was shattered with 111 mm of rain, causing river levels, including the Brahmaputra, to surge dangerously.

Tragedy in Arunachal Pradesh

Arunachal Pradesh bore the brunt of the disaster, with nine deaths reported. A devastating incident last night saw a landslide sweep a car carrying two families into a deep gorge on NH-13 between Bana and Seppa, killing seven. Arunachal Pradesh Home Minister Mama Natung expressed his grief on Facebook, urging residents to avoid night travel during the monsoon season.

Another landslide in Ziro’s Cabbage Garden area claimed two lives—a man and a woman from Lakhimpur, Assam, who were working at a nearby restaurant when the landslide occurred. DySP Ojing Lego confirmed that their bodies have been recovered and handed over to their families.

Rescue Efforts and Weather Alerts

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said over 10,000 people have been impacted in six districts. Red and orange weather alerts have been issued for Assam, with orange and yellow alerts for the rest of the Northeast.

In Arunachal Pradesh, search and rescue operations were swiftly carried out by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), and local residents.

As the monsoon intensifies, authorities are working tirelessly to ensure the safety of those in vulnerable areas and urging residents to remain vigilant.
