BJP MP P.P. Chaudhary says simultaneous elections across India could significantly reduce costs, improve governance efficiency and boost GDP growth.
May 20, 2026: The proposal for conducting simultaneous Lok Sabha, Assembly and local body elections in India could result in massive economic and administrative benefits, according to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP P.P. Chaudhary. He stated that the move could save nearly ₹7 lakh crore, improve governance efficiency and add up to 1.6 percentage points to India’s GDP growth.
Chaudhary, who chairs the 39-member Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) examining the One Nation One Election proposal, said the idea was first studied by a high-level committee headed by former President Ram Nath Kovind on the initiative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The committee reportedly spent 186 days preparing its report, which recommended synchronising Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in the first phase, followed by Panchayat and municipal polls within 100 days.
The JPC, which is examining the Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill, 2024 and related amendments, includes MPs from both Houses of Parliament. While the proposal has gained support from some quarters, it has also faced strong opposition from several political parties. Critics, including Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, have raised concerns about logistics and the availability of EVMs. Former Chief Justice of India U.U. Lalit has also acknowledged potential benefits but warned of serious constitutional and practical challenges, urging caution in implementation. The committee is currently holding consultations in Gujarat with state officials as part of its ongoing review process.
