BJP candidate secures 156 votes as AAP stays out of mayoral contest
Apirl 29, 2026: Parvesh Wahi of the Bharatiya Janata Party has been elected Mayor of Delhi after securing 156 out of 165 votes, marking a decisive win in the Municipal Corporation. His victory reflects the BJP’s strong numerical position in the civic body. After the results, Wahi said his priority would be to improve public services and address long-standing civic issues, including waste management, promising a cleaner Delhi.
The election outcome was largely influenced by the absence of the Aam Aadmi Party from the mayoral and deputy mayor races. With AAP opting out, the BJP entered the contest with a clear advantage. The electoral college for the mayoral poll included councillors, Members of Parliament, and legislators, where BJP already had a solid base of support.
According to available figures, BJP had around 142 assured votes, including elected councillors, MPs, and nominated MLAs. In contrast, AAP’s strength had reduced to 105 votes following internal changes, including the exit of Swati Maliwal. The result is being seen as a significant boost for BJP’s political position in Delhi’s civic governance.
