Fact check confirms no increase in petrol or diesel prices, urges public to rely on official sources
April 29, 2026: The Press Information Bureau (PIB) has dismissed viral claims on social media suggesting a sharp increase in petrol and diesel prices. The message, falsely presented as an official order from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, claimed that petrol prices had risen by ₹10 per litre and diesel by ₹12.50 per litre. PIB clarified that no such order has been issued and urged citizens to verify information through official government channels.
The fake documents also cited a supposed surge in global crude oil prices as the reason for the alleged hike, claiming significant “under-recoveries” in fuel sales. Another fabricated notice, purportedly from the Ministry of Finance, attempted to give legal backing to the claim under the Central Excise Act, 1944. Authorities confirmed that both documents are false and misleading.
Officials reiterated that fuel prices remain unchanged across major cities. In Delhi, petrol continues to be priced at ₹94.77 per litre and diesel at ₹87.67, while in Mumbai, petrol stands at ₹103.54 and diesel at ₹90.03 per litre. The government has advised people to avoid sharing unverified messages that may create confusion or panic.
