PM Narendra Modi calls Kalpakkam reactor milestone historic, stresses renewable growth and digital Census 2027 preparations
April 26, 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his 133rd Mann Ki Baat address, highlighted key developments in India’s nuclear energy sector, calling the achievement of first criticality at the 500 MWe Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) in Kalpakkam a historic milestone. He said the reactor, built using indigenous technology, marks a crucial step in advancing India’s three-stage nuclear programme. While commercial power generation will take time, the milestone signals progress in developing advanced nuclear capabilities that can both generate energy and produce new fuel.
The Prime Minister also referred to the SHANTI Act 2025, which aims to modernise India’s nuclear energy framework by allowing private and foreign participation under regulated safeguards. He said the reforms would help scale nuclear infrastructure and strengthen the country’s long-term energy security. Alongside nuclear progress, Modi highlighted India’s growing renewable capacity, noting that wind energy installations have crossed 56 gigawatts, placing the country fourth globally.
On governance and social initiatives, Modi spoke about preparations for Census 2027, which will be conducted digitally for the first time. Citizens will be able to self-enumerate through an app before official visits. He also praised India’s performance in global academic competitions and noted the rising international recognition of Indian products. Concluding his address, he urged citizens to actively participate in national initiatives and reflected on upcoming cultural and historical milestones.
