India and Cyprus upgraded bilateral relations to a strategic partnership during talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi
May 22, 2026: India and Cyprus on Friday elevated their bilateral relationship to a strategic partnership as Prime Minister Narendra Modi held wide-ranging discussions with Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides. The two countries also announced the formation of a joint task force aimed at expanding cooperation in sectors including infrastructure and shipping.
During the talks, the leaders reviewed economic ties, global developments and future investment opportunities. Modi said investment flows from Cyprus to India had nearly doubled over the past decade and expressed confidence that the figure could double again within the next five years, especially with growing opportunities linked to the proposed India-European Union Free Trade Agreement.
The two sides also discussed the conflicts in West Asia and Ukraine, with Modi reiterating India’s support for efforts aimed at achieving peace and ending hostilities. Both countries agreed to strengthen cooperation in maritime security and counter-terrorism while also stressing the need for reforms in global institutions to address emerging international challenges. Christodoulides is currently on a three-day visit to India.
