Prime Minister Narendra Modi performed a ‘Sashtang Pranam’ during the swearing-in ceremony of Suvendu Adhikari, expressing gratitude to the people of West Bengal after the BJP formed its first government in the state since Independence.

Sharing the moment on social media platform X, Modi said he bowed to the “Jana Shakti” of Bengal, calling the blessings of the people the true strength of democracy. A video of the gesture quickly went viral online, showing the Prime Minister lying prostrate on a red-carpeted stage while BJP supporters and leaders applauded during the celebrations.

BJP Registers Landmark Win In Bengal

The BJP secured a massive victory in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections by winning around 207 seats in the 294-member Assembly, defeating the long-standing rule of the Trinamool Congress. The result marked a major political shift in the state, where regional and Left parties had dominated politics for decades.

Following the victory, Suvendu Adhikari took oath as West Bengal’s first BJP Chief Minister at Kolkata’s Brigade Parade Ground. The oath ceremony was conducted by Governor R. N. Ravi in the presence of several senior NDA leaders.

The grand event witnessed the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, along with chief ministers from NDA-ruled states, Union ministers, and senior BJP leaders. Reacting to the victory, Modi declared that “the lotus blooms in Bengal,” describing the election outcome as a triumph of development politics, governance, and people’s trust.

Party supporters called the result one of the most significant political developments in modern Bengal politics, highlighting BJP’s rapid rise in the state over the past decade. Modi’s public gesture of bowing before the people of Bengal was widely seen by supporters as a symbol of humility and gratitude after the party’s breakthrough win.
