A controversy has erupted in Karnataka’s Bhatkal after Hindu activists intercepted a car carrying a Muslim youth

June 18, 2026: A case of alleged vigilantism has surfaced in Karnataka’s Uttara Kannada district after members of Hindu organisations intercepted a car carrying a Muslim youth and a Hindu woman in Bhatkal on Wednesday evening. According to reports, the activists stopped the vehicle on the Bhatkal-Sagar Road after receiving information about the pair and questioned both occupants. The woman was later sent back to her residence, while the youth was handed over to the police.

Following the incident, police registered an FIR against several Hindu organisation leaders involved in the interception. The action triggered strong objections from the groups, which argued that they had acted responsibly by ensuring the woman’s safety and handing the youth over to authorities without any violence or harm.

The FIR led to protests outside the Bhatkal Town Police Station, where hundreds of activists gathered to demand clarification from the police. Authorities have stated that Bhatkal is a sensitive area and that legal action was necessary while a detailed investigation is carried out. Police have not yet disclosed details about the relationship between the two individuals or the exact charges included in the FIR.
