Rahul Gandhi attacks Himanta Biswa Sarma over corruption and divisive politics, unveils Congress poll promises
April 5, 2026: Addressing a rally in Biswanath, Rahul Gandhi launched a sharp attack on the BJP and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accusing them of dividing communities, promoting corruption, and failing to deliver on past promises. He invoked icons like Srimanta Sankardev, Gopinath Bordoloi, Bhupen Hazarika, Azan Pir, and Zubeen Garg to underline Assam’s legacy of unity, contrasting it with what he described as divisive politics under the current regime.
Gandhi alleged that the state government had turned Assam into an “ATM” for select industrial houses, claiming land was being handed over for commissions and that corruption extended to the chief minister’s family. He further accused the BJP of making false promises in previous elections, including granting Scheduled Tribe status to six communities, depositing ₹15 lakh in bank accounts, and raising tea garden workers’ wages. “Congress does not spread hatred but works to unite people,” he said, describing Assam as a diverse yet harmonious society.
Outlining Congress’s poll promises, Gandhi said the party would grant ST status to six communities and increase daily wages of tea garden workers to ₹450. He also announced key welfare measures such as monthly cash transfers to women, ₹50,000 support for women entrepreneurs, ₹25 lakh health insurance for families, land rights for indigenous people, and pensions for the elderly. Gandhi is scheduled to address more rallies ahead of voting for 126 seats on April 9, with results to be declared on May 4.
