Indian Railways moves to modernise Shatabdi and Jan Shatabdi trains with improved comfort, interiors, and facilities.

April 27, 2026: Indian Railways has announced a major upgrade plan for its premium Shatabdi Express and Jan Shatabdi Express trains, aiming to enhance passenger comfort and overall travel experience. The Railway Board has directed all zones to prepare detailed action plans, following an official order issued in April, stressing the need for better maintenance and improved aesthetics across nearly 100 services.

The proposed upgrades will focus on key passenger-facing areas, including washrooms, doors, locks, washbasins, flushing systems, and drainage. Authorities have also been asked to improve seat upholstery and onboard facilities such as mobile charging ports, snack tables, footrests, armrests, roller blinds, and magazine pockets to ensure a more comfortable journey.

In addition, efforts will be made to reduce jerks in coaches and upgrade vestibules, gangways, interiors, flooring, and overhead panels. Digital passenger information systems, CCTV cameras, and exterior coach aesthetics—including window glass and destination boards—will also be enhanced. The Railway Board has instructed zonal units to conduct detailed audits, identify gaps, and implement time-bound improvements to modernise these flagship trains.
