Advanced Project 17A stealth frigate set for commissioning in Visakhapatnam
April 3, 2026: The Indian Navy is set to commission the advanced stealth frigate INS Taragiri on Friday in Visakhapatnam, with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh attending the ceremony. The event will be hosted by Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi, marking a significant addition to India’s maritime capabilities.
As the fourth warship under the Project 17A class, INS Taragiri represents a major step forward in indigenous naval engineering. Built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, the 6,670-tonne frigate boasts over 75% indigenous content, reflecting India’s push for self-reliance under the ‘Make in India’ initiative. Designed with reduced radar cross-section for stealth operations, the vessel enhances the Navy’s operational edge in modern warfare scenarios.
Equipped with advanced weapon systems including supersonic surface-to-surface missiles, medium-range air defence systems, and anti-submarine warfare capabilities, Taragiri is built for multi-dimensional missions. Beyond combat, it is also capable of humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations, underscoring India’s growing role in the Indo-Pacific and its commitment to safeguarding maritime interests.
