BJP leader Ratna Debnath alleged lapses in the RG Kar investigation and accused top state authorities of shielding those linked to the case.

May 15, 2026: Following the suspension of three police officers by the West Bengal government over alleged lapses in the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder investigation, BJP leader and victim’s mother Ratna Debnath made a series of fresh allegations regarding the handling of the case.

Speaking in North 24 Parganas, Debnath alleged that several people connected to the incident had still not been questioned by investigators. “The people who had dinner with my daughter that night have not been investigated yet. Only the principal is in jail,” she said while expressing dissatisfaction with the progress of the probe.

She further alleged that college authorities, along with Mamata Banerjee, were responsible for the incident. Debnath also claimed that former Health Secretary Narayanswaroop Nigam was linked to the murder of her daughter.

The remarks came shortly after the state government suspended former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal, former Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Abhishek Gupta and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Indira Mukherjee over alleged irregularities and lapses in the investigation.

The RG Kar case had sparked nationwide protests last year, with doctors, healthcare workers and citizens demanding justice for the trainee doctor and stronger safety measures for women at workplaces.
