Nitish Kumar’s resignation signals a major political shift as BJP prepares to lead Bihar government for the first time.

April 14, 2026: Bihar is set for a major political transition as Chief Minister Nitish Kumar prepares to step down after nearly two decades in power. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is expected to lead the next government, with Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary emerging as the frontrunner for the top post. The BJP legislature party is scheduled to meet in Patna under the supervision of Shivraj Singh Chouhan to elect its leader, whose name will then be endorsed by NDA lawmakers.

Even as political negotiations intensified, Nitish Kumar spent his final full day in office reviewing infrastructure projects, including a four-lane road in Saran and a bridge project in Patna. He also visited his new residence, where he is expected to shift after stepping down. Meanwhile, the Janata Dal (United) remained engaged in discussions over cabinet formation and power-sharing within the NDA. The developments drew criticism from opposition leader Tejashwi Yadav, who termed the resignation a “forced decision.”

Strong signals point to Samrat Choudhary’s elevation, with his residence becoming the centre of political activity and visits from top officials indicating an imminent transition. While other names have been discussed, momentum remains in his favour. With the NDA holding a comfortable majority in the 243-member assembly, the BJP is poised to lead Bihar for the first time. The new government is expected to be sworn in on April 15, with senior leaders like Narendra Modi and Amit Shah likely to attend.
