Choudhary-led NDA government wins majority comfortably in 243-member House

April 24, 2026: The National Democratic Alliance government led by Samrat Choudhary won the vote of confidence in the Bihar Assembly during a special one-day session. Moving the motion in the House, Choudhary sought trust in the council of ministers, which was passed by a voice vote in the 243-member विधानसभा, where the alliance holds a strong majority with 202 seats.

Choudhary recently became the first leader from the Bharatiya Janata Party to head the Bihar government after Nitish Kumar stepped down following his election to the Rajya Sabha. In the new cabinet, only two leaders from the Janata Dal (United)—Vijay Kumar Chaudhary and Bijendra Prasad Yadav—were inducted and appointed as deputy chief ministers.

The BJP-led coalition also includes Chirag Paswan’s party, Jitan Ram Manjhi’s HAM, and Upendra Kushwaha’s outfit. The five-party alliance had secured 202 seats in the previous assembly elections, enabling it to comfortably pass the trust vote and consolidate its position in Bihar.
