Supreme Court of India cautions against politicising ED case involving Mamata Banerjee
April 22, 2026: The Supreme Court of India on Wednesday heard the Enforcement Directorate’s case alleging interference by Mamata Banerjee during a raid, with arguments concluding for the day. Lawyers representing Banerjee and the state police contended that the ED’s plea was not maintainable.
During the hearing, the court made strong observations, cautioning against framing the issue as a Centre versus state dispute. It remarked that the matter involved “an individual who happens to be the Chief Minister,” and noted that the Constitution’s framers may not have envisioned such a scenario.
The bench also observed that any interference during an ongoing probe could raise concerns for democratic functioning. The court is set to hear submissions from Tushar Mehta, representing the Enforcement Directorate, on Thursday.
