Separate celebrations by the Uddhav Thackeray and Eknath Shinde factions have transformed Shiv Sena’s 60th foundation day
June 19, 2026: The 60th foundation day of Shiv Sena has become a major political event in Mumbai, with both rival factions of the party holding separate celebrations and displaying their organisational strength. The anniversary marks six decades since the party was founded by Balasaheb Thackeray, but instead of a united commemoration, it has highlighted the deep divisions that emerged following the party split in 2022. The rivalry between the Uddhav Thackeray-led faction and the Eknath Shinde-led faction continues to shape Maharashtra’s political landscape.
The Uddhav Thackeray camp organised a large gathering at Shanmukhanand Hall in Matunga, where senior leaders are expected to address party workers and reaffirm the faction’s political position. Meanwhile, the Shinde faction arranged its own grand event at the NESCO Exhibition Centre in Goregaon, where Chief Minister Eknath Shinde is scheduled to speak before supporters. Both camps are using the occasion to demonstrate their influence and reinforce claims of being the true heirs to the Shiv Sena legacy.
The celebrations come amid renewed political tensions following reports of defections and internal realignments within the party. Alleged shifts in loyalty by several MPs have intensified the battle between the two groups, leading to aggressive poster campaigns across Mumbai. With rival factions competing for legitimacy and public support, police have strengthened security arrangements across the city to prevent any untoward incidents. The foundation day has effectively become a symbolic contest over identity, leadership and the future direction of one of Maharashtra’s most influential regional parties.
